Salcombe Gin, the award-winning spirits company based in South Devon, created the world’s first crowdsourced gin via Instagram Live on Thursday 9 April. The limited-edition gin was named ‘Nightingale’ by the public and sold-out in less than 24-hours, raising over £2,500 for the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.
Gin lovers joined Master Distiller; Jason Nickels live before the Easter weekend commenced to co-create ‘Nightingale’.
During the live event, Nickels explained the distillation process and shared insights on how to create a balanced and harmonious gin before asking viewers to choose their favourite botanicals and final recipe for the new gin before choosing the name for the spirit.
The world’s first crowdsourced gin via Instagram Live is 45% ABV and has a backbone of Macedonian juniper, English coriander seed and orris root combined with eight further botanicals selected by the Instagram Live audience.
The botanicals selected by the audience include the fresh citrus notes of grapefruit peel accompanied by the soft floral flavours of hibiscus, earthy notes from angelica root and a subtle spice from cinnamon and pink peppercorns. The finish is smooth from the seaweed Master Distiller, Nickels recommended adding and holds a subtle sweetness from elderberries with a fresh zingy flavour from kaffir lime leaves.
This recipe will be distilled on a traditional 60 litre copper pot still to produce 100 50cl bottles of limited-edition gin. The gin was available to pre-order and sold out within 24-hours with 100% of the proceeds being donated to the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.
NHS CHARITIES TOGETHER
In an effort to support the NHS, the spirit brand is donating all profits from the sales of the new gin to the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal, the official NHS fund dedicated to supporting staff and volunteers who are working to care for COVID-19 patients.
Jason Nickels, Master Distiller at Salcombe Gin said: “It was really uplifting to engage with the public during these times of isolation via Instagram Live. The community really got involved in the process and we had fun creating a great tasting limited-edition gin, which we’re proud to add to the Salcombe Gin portfolio. We are truly overwhelmed by the support and response to the new gin ‘Nightingale’, which sold-out in less than 24-hours and helped us raise over £2,500 to support the amazing NHS staff and volunteers who are working tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
