Join us on our next Food Labelling Workshop with Clare Wood of Food Labelling Services on Wednesday 25th September, kindly hosted by Old Mill.
Taste of the West will be holding back-to-back workshops on Food Labelling and Nutritional Information - these sessions are designed to give you practical, bespoke advice to ensure your products give consumers the information they need whilst meeting all legal requirements in a time of complex and changing regulations.
The Food Labelling Workshop will take place in the morning and will help explain the key regulations declared in the Food Information for Consumers regulation 1169/2011, so that you can design packaging that is legally compliant and works best for your product. What will be covered? Clare will explain in detail the requirements in the regulations and will cover: Name of the food, ingredient List, QUID, allergens, quantity, date marking, storage instructions, instructions for use, country of origin, name and address.
In the afternoon, following a light lunch supplied by Old Mill, Clare will turn the focus to Nutrition Information. It is now mandatory to declare nutrition in a prescribed way, as detailed in the Food Information for Consumers Regulation EU 1169/2011. These requirements will be explained in detail at this session. What will be covered? Mandatory nutrients, additional nutrients, vitamins & minerals (including significant amounts of and Nutrient Reference Number, presentation (eg per serving, number of servings, tabular vs linear), reference intakes, calculation, exempt products, nutrition signposts - traffic lights (serving size, colour coding, %RI). We will also look at some practical examples of creating basic pack copy and checking an incorrect food label.

The morning over run slightly which is a real credit to Clare’s passion for helping the businesses in the room. On the day you will be given a comprehensive booklet which includes almost all the information you could ever want on food labelling. The booklet includes current regulation, allergen information, myth busting, worked examples, diagrams and group exercises. Clare talks through the booklet on the day, tailoring the presentation to the businesses in the room. Questions are welcomed and are answered straight away so you are not left wondering how the legislation applies to you. It’s amazing how many grey areas there are in the rules and so it’s great to have someone like Clare on hand to put your mind at rest or direct you on the correct path.
As well as informing the group of what is required on the labels, Clare also covers what you can leave out. She appreciates that everyone is trying to run a business and the last thing you want to do is give away all your secret recipe so that it can be copied by a competitor."
These workshops are aimed at food and drink producers based in the South West of England. They cost £50 + VAT to attend one workshop OR £75 + VAT for both (for Taste of the West members only).
