At the Elizabethan Inn, we work hard to provide our customers with not only a great choice of quality and affordable, good, honest Devon food- but for it to be served in a hospitable, friendly environment. We take great pride in what we do and are passionate about our pub. Being located in a prime farming community we benefit greatly from our neighbours' produce and use as much as possible to give our food its unique depth and richness of flavour. All dishes and desserts are made on the premises using either our own original recipes or great classics that have been used for many years. Whether it be dry curing bacon, making pies and sausages, producing chutneys, mayonnaise and parfaits, we are always looking to develop and produce new ideas. We both sincerely hope that you enjoy the fruits of our labour!

The majority of farmers have moved away from native breeds and moved towards large breeds creating bigger yields but sacrificing welfare and taste and jeopardising the existence of a lot of traditional local breeds. The farmers we work with share our ethos of maturing the animal on the hoof rather than on the hook.

Gill and Alex took over the Black River Inn in June of 2018. With a combined experience of over 30 years in the hospitality and catering industry attaining awards for their food and service they decided it was time to do what they have done so well for others for themselves and under took a complete refurbishment of the traditional pub, to what you see today; a beautiful and tasteful mix of old and new complimenting each other. It is told that the village is supposedly named due to the fact the River Torridge runs through the village black on account of the stones in the river bed. Thus, the pub was renamed in June 2018 by the Alex and Gill to coincide with it’s village situation and links.
Our Head Chef, Richard Devine has designed different styles of menu to offer a little something for everyone.
