The Nearly Naked Veg Company has announced it will be sponsoring rugby player Xander Connabeer who has recently been invited onto the under 16 England team. The teeanger will play in the International festival week which starts on Saturday, April 16 at Wellington College in Reading. England’s first opponents will be Canada the following day. They play France on April 19 and Scotland on April 22.
Xander, who lives at Buckfast but plays for Ivybridge where his father David is a coach, recently played his first game for England and scored his first try for his country.
Ben Brunning owner of the Nearly Naked Veg Company and himself an avid rugby player before his career was curtailed following a serious accident, said: “I’ve been following Xander’s career and he is a remarkably talented young player. To be able to help him as he starts out on his career is an honour and we all wish him every success for the future.”
Xander started his rugby career aged four years old and then joined his older brother and sister playing for Totnes RFC until he was eight. He later joined Ivybridge when the family moved to Buckfast. Last season he was invited to trial up a year for Devon County U16’s, and he was selected in his fly-half position where he continued to play for the entire county season. A dislocated shoulder ruled him out of rugby for a season but, having been given the all clear by his surgeon, he was selected to trial for the south west region. However, he failed to make selection but after playing a few more matches, the London and East region welcomed him with open arms. The team ended up winners of the tournament with Xander kicking five from seven and scoring ten points for the London side which help assured him a place on the England squad.
Xander said: “I was fairly overwhelmed when I received the letter. I was playing rugby for my school at the time. Mum came to watch and arrived about half time. I knew the letter was expected that morning and mum called me over. When I was told the news I was absolutely over the moon, the hard work and the many hours spent training have really paid off.” The sportsman added: “I’m really pleased that Ben is sponsoring me through his doorstep delivery company. Every little bit of sponsorship will really help and I’m very grateful.”
